New Delhi: In a significant push toward sustainable mobility, NITI Aayog has launched a comprehensive report titled “Unlocking a $200 Billion Opportunity: Electric Vehicles in India,” aimed at catalyzing India’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and achieving 30% EV penetration in total vehicle sales by 2030.
The report was launched by NITI Aayog Member Rajiv Gauba in the presence of CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, Ministry of Heavy Industries Secretary Kamran Rizvi, and other key dignitaries including OP Agarwal, Distinguished Fellow, and Sudhendu Sinha, Programme Director (E-Mobility).
Growth Snapshot & Global Comparison
According to the report, India’s EV growth has accelerated sharply, with annual EV sales rising from just 50,000 in 2016 to over 2.08 million in 2024. Globally, EV sales surged from 918,000 units in 2016 to 18.78 million in 2024. While India’s growth rate still trails behind the global curve, its EV penetration has improved from one-fifth to over two-fifths of the global rate between 2020 and 2024, marking significant progress.
Strategic Challenges and Recommendations
The report identifies several critical bottlenecks—ranging from charging infrastructure and battery supply chains to financing and regulatory inconsistencies—and outlines actionable policy solutions including:
- National coordination frameworks for EV adoption
- Investment in indigenous battery manufacturing
- Scalable charging networks
- Inclusion of two-wheelers and commercial fleets in incentive schemes
- Better integration of state EV policies
These were distilled from seven stakeholder consultations, involving policymakers, industry experts, and civil society.
