New Delhi: Maharatna public sector undertaking GAIL (India) Limited has announced a major infrastructure initiative involving the capacity expansion of its Jamnagar-Loni LPG pipeline, with a project outlay of approximately ₹5,350 crore. The move is aimed at enhancing energy delivery across five states—Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh—and supporting India’s growing demand for petroleum products.
The planned 1,107-km long pipeline will significantly increase the transportation capacity of the existing system and ensure safer, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable delivery of LPG. The company said the initiative aligns with India’s net zero emissions goals, as pipeline transmission reduces the carbon footprint compared to traditional road-based transport via tankers.
Boost to Sustainable Fuel Logistics
In an official statement, GAIL emphasized that the expansion will cater to the rising demand for LPG, particularly in Northern and Western India. The project is expected to not only increase capacity but also improve safety and reliability of the entire supply chain.
“LPG transmission through pipelines is not only safer and more cost-effective, but also significantly more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable,” the company said. “This project will be instrumental in strengthening the national energy grid and ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to millions of consumers.”
Additional ₹450 Crore Gas Spur Line to BPCL Bina Plant
In parallel, GAIL also approved the construction of a 114-kilometre natural gas spur pipeline from its Vijaipur gas processing plant to the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) refinery complex in Bina, Madhya Pradesh. The new line is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹450 crore.
The Bina refinery is undergoing a capacity expansion and the addition of a petrochemical complex, which will increase the demand for natural gas as feedstock. The spur pipeline will ensure reliable and timely gas supply to the expanding facility, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting India’s growing petrochemicals sector.
Strategic Infrastructure for Energy Security
The Jamnagar-Loni and Vijaipur-Bina projects form part of GAIL’s broader vision to scale up energy infrastructure, decarbonize operations, and enable cleaner fuels for industrial and domestic use. By reinforcing pipeline-based logistics, the company aims to decongest roads, reduce fuel losses, and minimize environmental risks.
The expansion projects also come at a time when India is prioritizing energy security, transitioning to cleaner fuels, and investing heavily in infrastructure under the National Gas Grid and Petrochemical Vision 2040.
These pipeline initiatives by GAIL underscore the PSU’s pivotal role in driving India’s energy transition through innovation, capacity enhancement, and strategic investments. The successful implementation of these projects will enhance regional connectivity, fuel availability, and operational resilience in India’s energy value chain.
