Bihar has witnessed a remarkable transformation in road infrastructure under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar. Over the past two decades, the state has not only doubled its total road length but has also set new benchmarks in rural and urban connectivity. This road revolution is being hailed as a cornerstone of Bihar’s overall development story.
Expansion of National and District Roads
In 2005, Bihar had just 3,629 km of national highways. By 2025, this figure has surged to 6,147 km. Similarly, major district roads have seen a twofold expansion, rising from 8,457 km to 16,296 km. Earlier, most roads were confined to single lanes, but today Bihar boasts a modern network of two, four, and six-lane highways that support faster travel and efficient logistics.
Rural Roads Driving Employment and Connectivity
The transformation is equally visible in rural Bihar. With the support of NABARD, 1,859 out of 2,025 approved rural roads have already been completed, covering 4,822 km in length. In addition, 910 out of 1,235 approved bridges are now operational. These rural roads and bridges have played a crucial role in connecting villages with cities, enabling access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. They have also created new employment opportunities and improved the quality of life in villages.
Roads Reshaping Bihar’s Economy
Bihar’s road infrastructure has become a key driver of the state’s socio-economic growth. Better connectivity has enhanced trade, allowed farmers to access wider markets, and facilitated the movement of agricultural produce. This has contributed significantly to strengthening rural incomes and empowering local communities.
Roads as the Path to All-Round Development
Experts note that Bihar’s improved road network has reduced travel time, improved logistics, and created new avenues for investment. The state is now counted among India’s leading regions in terms of rural infrastructure and road connectivity. With this progress, Bihar has not only bridged the urban-rural divide but also established a strong foundation for sustainable growth and inclusive development.
