New Delhi: Hon’ble Union Minister of Coal & Mines, Mr. G. Kishan Reddy, inaugurated a two-day International Seminar titled “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future: 175 Years of GSI” organised by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The landmark event celebrates GSI’s 175-year journey and its vital contributions to India’s mineral exploration, geoscience research and sustainable resource development.
Dignitaries Attend Grand Inaugural Ceremony
The seminar commenced with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony attended by prominent dignitaries and senior officials. Among them were Mr. Piyush Goyal, Secretary, Ministry of Mines; Mr. T. Ravikanth, Principal Secretary, Mines & Petroleum, Government of Rajasthan; Mr. Asit Saha, Director General, GSI; and several leading experts from the geoscience and mining sectors.
Their presence underscored the importance of the seminar as a platform to strengthen collaboration and acknowledge the pivotal role played by GSI in national development since its establishment in 1851.

In his remarks, Mr. G. Kishan Reddy highlighted the Geological Survey of India’s historic contributions to the discovery of mineral wealth that has powered India’s industrial development. The inaugural session reaffirmed GSI’s commitment to strengthening the country’s mineral resource base with modern scientific tools, improved exploration efficiency, and sustainable approaches.
He emphasised that as India advances toward becoming a global economic leader, geoscience-driven policy decisions and mineral security will play a key role in sustaining critical sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, defence, and renewable energy.

The seminar marks a significant milestone in GSI’s journey—from pioneering geological mapping in the 19th century to driving next-generation exploration today.
