Gujarat Aims for the Stars: Historic Pact to Make State India’s Astro-Tourism Capital, Rural Communities to be Empowered

Gujarat partners with Starscapes to develop India's first dark-sky tourism hubs, aiming for global stargazing leadership

In a visionary step toward redefining experiential travel in India, Gujarat Tourism has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Starscapes, one of India’s leading astro-tourism companies. The collaboration seeks to position Gujarat as the country’s top destination for night-sky experiences over the next five years.

With its clear skies and minimal light pollution, North Gujarat will serve as the launchpad for a unique initiative that promises to create sustainable, community-driven Astro Villages and designated dark-sky zones for stargazing.

Mapping Gujarat’s Celestial Potential

The first phase of this initiative involves a state-wide scientific survey to identify optimal stargazing sites based on key parameters like light pollution, accessibility, and infrastructure potential. North Gujarat has been chosen as the first region for this extensive assessment due to its favorable climate for clear night skies.

This effort will align with Gujarat Tourism’s ongoing strategy of thematic tourism development, expanding beyond heritage and nature tourism to include astro-tourism as a core offering.

Dark-Sky Zones and Astro Villages: A First for India

At the heart of the project is the creation of dark-sky zones—designated areas where artificial lighting is strictly limited to preserve celestial visibility. These will evolve into Astro Villages, eco-conscious communities built around stargazing tourism.

These villages will offer immersive experiences where tourists can observe stars, planets, and meteor showers while also engaging with Gujarat’s rich local culture and traditions.

Empowering Rural Communities Through Astro-Tourism

A key component of the initiative is economic empowerment. The Astro Villages will be developed in partnership with local communities, who will take on roles as night-sky guides, cultural interpreters, and eco-hospitality providers. Skill development programs will be conducted to help locals build careers in tourism, astronomy education, and conservation.

This grassroots model ensures that the benefits of tourism stay within the community, making it socially inclusive and economically sustainable.

Pioneering a Sustainable Tourism Model

By integrating eco-friendly infrastructure and community-led initiatives, this astro-tourism project sets a new precedent in sustainable tourism development. Gujarat aims to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, ensuring the state’s natural skies remain unspoiled for generations.

This initiative aligns with India’s broader push for responsible tourism, and Gujarat is poised to be a model state for such efforts.

Starscapes’ Vision for India’s Night-Sky Future

Starscapes brings deep expertise in astro-tourism, having successfully partnered with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) on the Nakshatra Campaign. Their launch of India’s first Astro-Tourism Guides Skill Development Program further demonstrates their commitment to nurturing this niche segment.

In Gujarat, Starscapes will work closely with rural communities to train locals as ambassadors of the dark sky, combining education, astronomy, and tourism to create an enriching visitor experience.

Lighting the Way to a New Tourism Frontier

This collaboration promises to transform Gujarat into India’s premier astro-tourism destination, drawing both domestic and international travelers eager to experience the magic of the night sky. From meteor showers to Milky Way sightings, Gujarat will offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences in harmony with nature.

With dark-sky zones, skill development, and rural economic upliftment at its core, the project is a shining example of tourism-led sustainable development. Gujarat’s journey to the stars has begun—and it’s one that promises to benefit the planet and its people alike.
