In a visionary move towards sustainable urban development, Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel has approved the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for implementing the Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana. This transformative scheme aims to streamline urban transportation while advancing climate-resilient infrastructure across municipal corporations in the state.
With a budgetary allocation of Rs. 200 crore, the scheme is set to redefine the way cities manage traffic, road infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.
Decongesting Cities Through Peripheral Connectivity
The Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana is designed to develop peripheral ring roads that allow smoother connectivity between different parts of the city without needing to pass through congested central areas. These roads will divert heavy traffic, reduce pressure on urban cores, and improve overall mobility across Gujarat’s major urban centres.
This move aligns with the state’s broader objective of creating well-organised, future-ready road networks while minimizing environmental impact.
Smart and Green Urban Planning
Under the guidance of Mr. Patel, an expert advisory committee chaired by the Principal Secretary was established to draft the SOP, bringing together professionals with technical, environmental, and urban planning expertise. The SOP recommends the adoption of advanced green-clean construction technologies and environmentally friendly materials to ensure that all new ring roads are both modern and sustainable.
The scheme promotes infrastructure that is low-maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, and compliant with eco-conscious design principles.
Circular Economy and Recycled Materials in Focus
In a significant step toward environmental conservation, the SOP mandates that at least 25% of construction materials used in these projects must be recycled. This initiative supports the circular economy by reducing the dependency on new raw materials and minimizing construction-related carbon footprints.
Provisions for Water Management, Tree Plantation, and Renewable Energy
The SOP covers holistic infrastructure planning, including carriageways, drainage systems, medians, shoulders, rainwater harvesting, and road safety measures. It also includes tree plantation along the ring roads to maintain ecological balance and improve urban air quality.
Moreover, the SOP encourages municipal corporations to incorporate renewable energy solutions in the total energy consumption of these projects—marking a shift toward energy-efficient urban development.
Ensuring Implementation with Technical and Environmental Oversight
Given the complexity and strategic importance of the project, implementation will strictly follow government guidelines and the approved SOP. All Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will undergo technical and environmental reviews to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
Driving the Vision of Urban Development Year 2025
As part of the broader mission to celebrate Urban Development Year 2025, the Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana is a key initiative aligned with Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel’s vision of building smart, sustainable, and future-ready cities in Gujarat.
This scheme is not just about roads—it’s a strategic push for climate-smart urban governance that will shape Gujarat’s urban landscape for decades to come.
