Chandigarh: The body of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar will be cremated today (October 15) at the Sector 25 cremation ground, as family consent has finally been obtained after days of impasse. The cremation comes amid an intense tug-of-war between procedural formalities and the family’s demand for justice.
Standstill Ends: Family Allows Postmortem, Cremation
The family had earlier withheld consent for postmortem and cremation, demanding the arrest of officials named in Puran Kumar’s alleged suicide note. After intense negotiations and pressure from Chandigarh Police, the family has now agreed to a postmortem, expected to be performed at PGIMER.
The Allegations: Caste Harassment, Mental Torture & Public Humiliation
Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, allegedly shot himself at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh on October 7. In the eight-page “final note,” he named several senior IAS/IPS officers, accusing them of caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation, and atrocities.
He also claimed to have been included in a bribery case unjustly and faced internal pressure and vilification.
Y Puran Kumar cremation: FIR, SIT & Political Fallout
On October 10, Chandigarh Police registered a FIR under abetment to suicide and relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, including Section 3(1)(r), as demanded by his wife, IAS Amneet P Kumar.

A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under IGP Pushpendra Kumar to probe the matter impartially. The Haryana government has placed DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave and transferred Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, both named in the note.
The opposition parties have amplified pressure for accountability. Congress has demanded the sacking and arrest of the DGP, alleging institutional bias against Dalits.
Y Puran Kumar cremation: A Twin Suicide Adds a New Twist
In a shocking turn, ASI Sandeep Kumar (Rohtak) allegedly committed suicide, accusing the late Puran Kumar of serious corruption and misuse of power. In a video message reportedly recorded before his death, he claimed that Puran Kumar had engaged in a ₹50 crore deal with gangster Rao Inderjit to influence a murder case.
Sandeep’s allegations deny a caste angle and instead point to systemic corruption, deepening the mystery and adding multiple layers to the ongoing investigation.
What Lies Ahead
The postmortem report may reveal crucial forensic evidence to confirm the cause of death.
The SIT must verify authenticity of the suicide note, identify all recipients, and trace digital drafts from Puran Kumar’s laptop. The FIR may be further amended to ensure stricter provisions under the SC/ST Act. Political agitation, protests (students, Dalit groups) and demands for transparency are likely to intensify.
Chief Minister Saini has vowed that “no matter how influential the culprit may be, no one will be spared.” Meanwhile, the cremation today marks both an end and a beginning — the end of silence, and the beginning of a deeper search for justice.
