The long-stalled fraud case involving controversial IAS officer Mr. Santosh Verma has been officially reopened, marking a significant development in Madhya Pradesh’s administrative and judicial oversight framework. The High Court’s approval has set the stage for renewed investigation, offering a glimpse of strengthened mechanisms for transparency and bureaucratic integrity.
Fresh Permission Boosts Police Inquiry
After years of waiting, the police have finally received the High Court’s consent to proceed with legal action. This approval empowers investigators to question the key individuals involved, including the judge allegedly connected to the fraudulent court orders. A detailed list of 50 questions has already been prepared to ensure a comprehensive probe.
The Forged Order That Sparked the Scandal
Mr. Verma had secured promotion to the IAS cadre by presenting a fabricated court acquittal order related to a sexual assault case filed by a woman. Once the discrepancies surfaced, the conduct of Special Judge Mr. Vijendra Singh Rawat also came under scrutiny, eventually leading to his transfer as suspicion intensified.
Judicial Oversight Intensifies
According to ACP Mr. Vinod Dixit, the High Court’s approval now allows legal action based on the SIT’s findings. Investigators uncovered indications that the forged acquittal order might have been generated under the supervision of Judge Rawat during his tenure in the district court in 2021. Although he was shifted due to suspicion earlier, no arrest was authorized until now.
Digital Evidence Strengthens the Case
Police forensic teams played a decisive role in unearthing deleted files from the judge’s court computer. The recovered hard disk contained two verdicts—one a resignation, the other an acquittal—raising major red flags. Despite the judge claiming he was on leave, his mobile tower location placed him at the court during the critical timeframe. Additional evidence from Mr. Verma’s chats further supported the investigation.
SIT Prepares for Further Action
Following a committee-led review that resulted in Judge Rawat’s suspension, the SIT sought explicit permission to intensify the probe. The High Court granted this approval on November 20, clearing legal hurdles for the next phase. Authorities have stated that the judge will be summoned through an official notice, mirroring the procedure used when Mr. Verma was arrested four years ago.
Madhya Pradesh IAS Association Maintains Neutral Stance
Despite the severity of the allegations, the Madhya Pradesh IAS Association has refrained from issuing a formal statement. Association President Mr. Manu Srivastava clarified that the issue remains a personal legal matter, and since the government is handling the proceedings, the association finds it inappropriate to comment at this stage.
