New Delhi: Rajit Punhani, a seasoned IAS officer from the 1991 Bihar cadre, has taken charge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). His appointment was formalized on Monday, marking a significant leadership change in the authority responsible for regulating food safety and standards across India.
Mr Punhani succeeds Ganji Kamala V. Rao, who recently retired, with the FSSAI post now temporarily upgraded to the Secretary rank within the Ministry of Health.
An Experienced Administrator Takes the Helm
IAS Punhani brings over three decades of extensive administrative experience to FSSAI. Before this appointment, he served as Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, as Secretary of the Rajya Sabha, and as CEO of Sansad TV. His career also includes tenure as Principal Secretary in Bihar.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College and the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, IAS Punhani is recognized for his adept handling of diverse administrative roles spanning central government departments, state governance, and parliamentary institutions. His well-rounded background positions him uniquely to navigate the complexities of food safety regulation at a critical juncture.

FSSAI Faces Supreme Court Deadline on Nutrition Labelling Rules
Mr Punhani’s arrival at FSSAI coincides with mounting pressure to finalize long-pending front-of-pack nutrition labelling (FOPNL) regulations. The Supreme Court has mandated the government to enforce rules requiring packaged food manufacturers to prominently display the levels of sugar, salt, and saturated fats on product labels.
Initially expected by July, the deadline was extended to October following FSSAI’s request for more time to incorporate expert committee recommendations. The delayed rollout has sparked concern among public health advocates, who see these rules as vital tools in combating India’s escalating public health crises, including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.
Balancing Public Health and Industry Concerns
The nutrition labelling debate places Punhani at the crossroads of competing interests. Health campaigners and judiciary demands urge swift, science-based reforms to protect consumers and promote healthier dietary choices.
Conversely, the packaged food industry has raised objections, citing economic and operational challenges related to strict labelling requirements. Critics accuse FSSAI of delaying implementation under industry influence, underscoring the challenging terrain the new CEO must navigate.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Expectations
Punhani’s tenure begins amid intense scrutiny from the judiciary, civil society, and consumers alike. His leadership will be critical in steering the regulator towards transparent, credible, and timely reforms in food labelling.
The success or failure of these reforms will significantly shape FSSAI’s credibility as a public health watchdog and determine Punhani’s legacy as CEO.
The FSSAI has yet to issue an official comment regarding Punhani’s appointment or updates on the nutrition labelling regulations.
