The prolonged deadlock between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the Raj Bhavan over the appointment of the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission (TNPSC) chairman has finally come to an end. Senior IAS officer S.K. Prabhakar has been appointed as the new chairman of the TNPSC, a key body responsible for most of the recruitment for the state government and its agencies.
Prabhakar’s Tenure and Background
S.K. Prabhakar, a seasoned bureaucrat with a distinguished career in Tamil Nadu’s administration, will serve as the TNPSC chairman for a period of six years from the date he assumes office or until he turns 62, whichever comes first. The appointment was confirmed by the state’s Human Resources Department, following consent from Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi.
Prabhakar has held several high-ranking positions within the state government, including the office of Commissioner of Revenue Administration. His extensive experience in public service is expected to bring strong leadership to the TNPSC.
Resolution of the Stalemate
The post of TNPSC chairman has been vacant since the retirement of K.A. Balachandran in 2022. The delay in appointing a full-time chairman was due to ongoing disagreements between the state government and the Governor. During this period, commission member C. Munianathan was appointed as the chairman in charge.
The stalemate escalated when Governor R.N. Ravi rejected the state government’s earlier proposal to appoint former DGP Sylendra Babu as the TNPSC chairman over a year ago. This refusal created a prolonged impasse, leaving the commission without a permanent head.
Recent Developments
The breakthrough in the impasse follows the state government’s appointment of five new members to the TNPSC earlier this February, after a gap of three years. The appointment of S.K. Prabhakar is seen as a significant step towards restoring the full functionality of the commission and ensuring that recruitment processes for the state government and its agencies can proceed smoothly.
With the appointment of Prabhakar, the TNPSC is expected to resume its critical role in the recruitment and selection of candidates for various state government positions, an area that had been in limbo due to the administrative standoff. The resolution of this issue is likely to ease tensions between the DMK government and the Governor, at least temporarily, and ensure the continued efficiency of Tamil Nadu’s public service recruitment system.
