New Delhi – Building on the success of the AK-203 programme, India and Russia are set to take a significant leap forward in defence industrial cooperation. Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), the joint venture at the heart of this initiative, is now advancing talks for the indigenous manufacturing of two cutting-edge firearms—the AK-19 carbine and the PPK-20 submachine gun. This marks a pivotal shift in India’s small arms ecosystem, positioning the country not just as a self-sufficient defence player but as a potential global supplier.
Expanding The Arsenal: From AK-203 to AK-19 and PPK-20
With 100% indigenisation of the AK-203 rifle firmly on track for December 2025, IRRPL is now preparing to add the AK-19 and PPK-20 to its production lines in Amethi’s Korwa facility.
The move is strategically timed to capitalise on IRRPL’s existing production infrastructure and technical momentum from the AK-203 programme. The next wave of manufacturing aims not only to meet the evolving needs of Indian armed forces and paramilitary units, but also to cater to international demand.
AK-203: Setting the Foundation for Expansion
As of July 2025, IRRPL has already delivered 55,000 AK-203 rifles, with another 7,000 scheduled for handover by August 15. With indigenisation currently at 50%—set to hit 70% by October—the Korwa facility is accelerating towards full localisation by year-end.
Backed by a ₹5,200 crore contract, IRRPL is expected to fulfil the Indian Army’s full order of 601,427 rifles by 2030, a remarkable 22 months ahead of schedule. Once fully ramped up, the plant will be producing one rifle every 100 seconds—translating to 600 rifles a day and 1.5 lakh annually.
Each weapon passes through a 120-step assembly line involving 180 subcomponents sourced from a growing network of Indian vendors. These numbers not only signal manufacturing prowess, but also a rapidly maturing domestic defence supply chain.
AK-19: NATO-Compatible Precision
Designed for export and NATO compatibility, the AK-19 is chambered for 5.56×45mm rounds and integrates modern tactical features while retaining the rugged reliability of the Kalashnikov platform.
Key Specifications:
- Weight: 3.35 kg
- Barrel Length: 415 mm
- Effective Range: 500 meters
- Rate of Fire: 400 rounds/min
- Picatinny rails for optics and accessories
- Birdcage-type flash suppressor with detachable suppressor compatibility
- Ergonomically redesigned polymer stock and grip
This rifle fills a crucial niche for Indian forces operating in multinational coalitions and also expands India’s export appeal to NATO-aligned countries.
PPK-20: Close-Quarters Combat Redefined
Based on the trusted PP-19 Vityaz, the PPK-20 submachine gun is tailored for high-mobility, close-quarters engagements. It has already been adopted by Russian special operations forces and is now slated for Indian manufacture.
Key Specifications:
- Weight: 2.9 kg (unloaded)
- Barrel Length: 233 mm
- Effective Range: Up to 150–200 meters
- Cyclic Rate: 800 rounds/min
- Ammunition: 9×19mm, including armour-piercing 7N21
- Folding stock, ambidextrous selector, and accessory rails
The PPK-20’s compact form factor and versatility make it ideal for India’s special forces, paramilitary units, and elite police formations.
Export Strategy and Global Outlook
IRRPL’s ambitions go far beyond domestic defence needs. Major General Sharma confirmed that multiple international inquiries have already been received for all three Kalashnikov variants. These include interest from friendly nations in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the MENA region.
Given Kalashnikov weapons’ widespread global reputation, the indigenous manufacturing of AK-19 and PPK-20 opens up robust export avenues for India. The strategic aim is to place IRRPL among the world’s top five small arms producers by 2032.
Local Jobs, Global Vision
IRRPL’s 8.5-acre Korwa facility currently employs over 260 people, including eight Russian technical experts, with plans to grow the workforce to 537 by 2026—90% of whom will be drawn from local talent pools.
The facility sources components from two primary Indian suppliers who in turn depend on a web of specialised vendors—building an ecosystem of precision engineering and skill development that directly contributes to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Each rifle is built to fire 15,000 rounds in its lifecycle, undergoing rigorous quality control and live-fire testing to match or exceed Russian benchmarks.
Roadmap Ahead: Production to Begin Post-2030
While AK-203 production continues at full throttle, manufacturing of AK-19 and PPK-20 is expected to commence in 2026, after finalisation of technology transfer. Export-ready production will begin post-2030 once domestic needs are met and output is scaled up.
This phased rollout allows IRRPL to maximise operational efficiency while expanding its product base, enabling India to dominate the global small arms market over the next decade.
A Strategic Pivot for Indian Defence Manufacturing
The proposed expansion into AK-19 and PPK-20 production reflects more than just a diversification of inventory—it symbolises India’s transition from a major importer to a formidable global manufacturer of high-precision infantry weapons.
By leveraging world-class designs, indigenous manufacturing capabilities, and strategic geopolitical partnerships, India is charting a new course in the defence sector—one defined by self-reliance, innovation, and export dominance.
