New Delhi: In a bold stride toward defence self-reliance, India has shortlisted seven industrial contenders to partner in its Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) stealth fighter programme.
Two high-level committees—the first run by DRDO and the second led by the Defence Secretary—are now evaluating technical, manufacturing, and financial credentials.
These firms must demonstrate that they can set up dedicated manufacturing lines, complete prototype fabrication, conduct flight tests, and achieve certification—all within a strict eight-year timeline.
5th-Gen AMCA Stealth Fighter Project: Who’s in the Running & Key Alliances
The pool of bidders spans both public sector giants and private players. Names reported include HAL, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Bharat Forge, Axiscades Technologies, Goodluck India, BrahMos Aerospace, and Adani Defence & Aerospace.
In a strategic move, Adani Defence & Aerospace has tied up with Hyderabad’s MTAR Technologies to strengthen its bid for the ₹15,000+ crore contract to build AMCA prototypes. MTAR is already known for supplying propulsion and precision subsystems for ISRO and DRDO projects.
A committee led by former BrahMos Aerospace chief A. Sivathanu Pillai is expected to complete the technical assessment before forwarding recommendations to the Ministry of Defence.
5th-Gen AMCA Stealth Fighter Project: Stakes, Timeline & Challenges
The AMCA programme is one of India’s most ambitious defence projects, designed to field a 5th-generation stealth fighter jet and reduce dependence on foreign imports.
If all goes as planned:
- The first prototype’s maiden flight is expected by 2029.
- Full development may wrap up by 2034, with production beginning soon after.
- The programme is estimated to attract investments upward of ₹2 lakh crore and aims to deliver over 125 jets over its lifecycle.
Challenges: To meet stringent performance, stealth, avionics, and certification standards; ensuring indigenous supply chains; and aligning public-private collaboration at scale.
Importance of 5th-Gen AMCA Stealth Fighter Project: India’s Defence Roadmap
This development is not just about a fighter jet. It’s a signal that India is accelerating its Atmanirbhar Bharat goal, pushing for greater private sector involvement in defence, and building a long-term indigenous manufacturing base.
The success of this endeavour could deepen capabilities in aerospace, avionics, materials, and systems integration—benefiting other strategic platforms.
What’s Next?
1. Panels finalize evaluation and send their recommendations to the MoD leadership.
2. Two firms will be shortlisted to share funding for prototype development.
3. Contracts will be awarded for prototype development, followed by production under competitive bidding.
4. The wider defence ecosystem will be tested—component makers, supply chains, and certifications must scale up fast.
