New Delhi – India and South Korea took a decisive step toward enhancing maritime cooperation as the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Korea Coast Guard (KCG) convened their 13th High-Level Meeting (HLM) in New Delhi today.
The dialogue reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to strengthen collaboration in key operational areas, including Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), Pollution Response (PR), and Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE). The engagement comes under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two maritime forces in 2006.
Strengthening Maritime Safety and Coordination

The meeting was co-chaired by Director General S. Paramesh of the Indian Coast Guard and Commissioner General Kim Yong Jin of the Korea Coast Guard. The high-level discussion aimed to boost synergy between the two agencies and facilitate the exchange of operational expertise.
Both delegations agreed to scale up efforts to share best practices in joint maritime operations and improve interoperability during coordinated missions. The focus remained on building a robust and secure maritime environment in the Indo-Pacific region through shared commitment and institutional cooperation.

Industrial and Operational Linkages on the Agenda
The Korean delegation, led by Commissioner General Kim Yong Jin, is currently on a five-day official visit to India from July 20 to 24. As part of the visit, the five-member team will travel to Mumbai from July 23 to 24.
In Mumbai, they are scheduled to visit the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), one of India’s premier defence shipyards. The itinerary also includes a tour of an Indian Coast Guard patrol vessel, underlining the operational exchange and potential for maritime industrial collaboration between the two countries.
Reinforcing a Longstanding Partnership

The ongoing series of High-Level Meetings, now in its 13th edition, reflects the growing importance of bilateral maritime cooperation between India and South Korea. With evolving regional maritime challenges, both nations are steadily building a resilient security framework based on trust, transparency, and tactical coordination.
The interaction not only paves the way for smoother joint operations at sea but also opens avenues for broader defence-industrial cooperation and knowledge sharing across critical sectors.
