India Unveils ₹1 Lakh Crore Defence Modernization Drive Under Operation Sindoor – Details Inside

New Delhi, 30 June 2025 — Under Operation Sindoor, India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is set to approve a sweeping modernization programme exceeding ₹1 lakh crore. The move aims to rapidly strengthen the country’s defence posture across multiple domains.

Air Surveillance Boost: Spy Planes Poised for Approval

The DAC will approve the purchase of three I‑STAR spy planes, which will improve battlefield awareness and help in tracking enemy targets. These aircraft will strengthen the Air Force’s surveillance network and offer real-time intelligence from high altitudes.

Rapid-Strike Air Defence: QRSAM Regiments On Deck

The council is also expected to clear funding of around ₹30,000 crore for Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) regiments. Built in India by DRDO, BDL, and BEL, these missiles are designed to respond quickly to aerial threats and can hit targets up to 30 kilometers away. This addition will improve frontline defence, especially along the western border.

Naval Fortification with Sea Mines & Underwater Drones

The Indian Navy will receive new pressure-based sea mines developed by DRDO. These weapons will guard coastal zones against enemy submarines and surface ships. Alongside this, the Navy will also acquire underwater autonomous vehicles to boost underwater tracking and maritime operations.

Su‑30MKI Fleet to Receive Performance Overhaul

The DAC will move forward with plans to upgrade 84 Su-30MKI fighter jets, improving their electronics, weapon systems, and engines. This step is crucial for keeping the aircraft combat-ready and aligned with modern air warfare standards.

Why This Matters Now

This is the DAC’s first major meeting since Operation Sindoor began. The timing reflects India’s intent to respond swiftly to changing threats. These new proposals will cover air, land, and sea operations, strengthening national security on all fronts. By speeding up approvals and reducing delays, the government is aiming to cut procurement time from six years to just two.
