New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to conduct a two-day aerial exercise in the Arabian Sea from September 2–3, 2025. The drill zone lies about 200 nautical miles off Karachi, with parts extending as close as 70 nautical miles from Pakistani-controlled airspace.
Exercise Timelines and Safety Measures
The exercise begins on September 2 at 11:00 AM IST and concludes on September 3 at 2:00 PM IST. While strategically located, defence officials have described the operation as routine training rather than a provocation.
To ensure air safety, India issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), alerting commercial airlines and operators about temporary airspace restrictions. The NOTAM, in line with international aviation protocols, helps pilots adjust routes and maintain safe separation from military activity.
Operational and Strategic Significance
Conducting the drill so close to Pakistan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ) allows the IAF to test aircraft, communications, and combat readiness in a sensitive region. Training in such zones sharpens preparedness for real-world contingencies, particularly during regional tensions.
The Arabian Sea holds growing importance for India, given its role in safeguarding energy shipping lanes, trade routes, and countering state and non-state threats. The choice of location underlines India’s intent to reinforce deterrence and maintain credible force projection.
Regional Scrutiny Expected
Though India has emphasised the exercise as part of routine training cycles, its proximity to Pakistan is expected to draw close monitoring from Islamabad. Pakistan typically observes Indian military activity in nearby zones with heightened attention.
By adhering to international aviation norms while conducting sensitive training, the IAF demonstrates both operational professionalism and strategic intent. The exercise highlights India’s emphasis on readiness, interoperability, and maritime security across its western front.
