New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster India’s air defence capabilities along the western front, the Indian Army has floated a tender for the procurement of AK-630 air defence guns from Advanced Weapon and Equipment India Ltd (AWEIL). The initiative is part of Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a comprehensive national security program announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address, aimed at modernising India’s defence infrastructure and enhancing operational readiness.
AK-630: A Game-Changer for Low-Altitude Threats
The AK-630 is a 30mm multi-barrel, mobile air defence system, capable of engaging unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), rockets, artillery, and mortars (URAM). With an effective range of approximately 4 km and a cyclic firing rate of up to 3,000 rounds per minute, the system is designed for rapid-response and high-impact scenarios.
Mounted on trailers and towed by high-mobility vehicles, the guns will be equipped with all-weather electro-optical fire control systems for precision targeting of low-flying threats, ensuring 24×7 protection of population centres and religious sites near the India-Pakistan border.
Lessons from Operation Sindoor Prompt Urgent Modernisation
The urgency behind this procurement stems from critical lessons learned during Operation Sindoor, India’s strategic counteroffensive launched on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which resulted in 26 civilian casualties.
During Operation Sindoor, air defence units played a decisive role, neutralising multiple airborne threats—including drones and aircraft deployed by the Pakistan Army—targeting civilian and religious infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. The Army’s success in countering these threats reaffirmed the need for enhanced mobile air defence capabilities like the AK-630.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra: India’s National Security Overhaul
Mission Sudarshan Chakra is envisioned as a multi-layered, indigenous national security shield to be fully operational by 2035. The mission includes integration of:
- Advanced air defence systems
- Real-time surveillance technologies
- Robust cybersecurity infrastructure
It also aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, prioritising indigenous defence manufacturing and technological innovation.
Strategic Impact and the Road Ahead
The inclusion of the AK-630 in India’s air defence arsenal represents a proactive shift in threat mitigation strategy, particularly against low-cost, high-impact threats like drones and rocket attacks. The tender issuance reflects India’s broader defence preparedness strategy, especially in light of cross-border hostilities and evolving asymmetric warfare tactics.
By investing in advanced, mobile, and indigenous systems, the Indian Army aims to maintain round-the-clock aerial defence readiness, ensuring the safety of both military assets and civilian zones near conflict-prone areas.
