Jaipur: In a significant leap for India’s defence technology, the Indian Army’s Western Command successfully validated the indigenous 100-kilometre range Kharga Chakra Electronic Warfare-Resilient Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) during operational trials at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan on Friday.

The trial demonstrates India’s accelerating push toward Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in high-end military platforms.

Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, Commander of the Indian Army’s Western Command, witnessed the exercise and lauded the drone’s performance, highlighting its potential to strengthen India’s aerial intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities even under contested electromagnetic conditions.

Background of Kharga Chakra EW-resilient UAV

The Kharga Chakra is a fixed-wing unmanned aerial system with an operational range of approximately 100 km and is designed to remain resilient against electronic warfare (EW) interference — including jamming and GPS signal disruption.

This capability is increasingly vital as modern battlefields see adversaries deploying advanced electronic attack systems aimed at degrading UAV navigation and communications.

EW-resilient drones like Kharga Chakra are engineered to continue missions autonomously even in suppressed electromagnetic environments.

Collaborative Defence Development

Developed through a collaboration between Chennai-based defence start-ups and the Indian Army’s own engineering teams — particularly the Kharga Corps’ artillery division — the Kharga Chakra reflects a growing partnership between the armed forces and the private sector.

Officials say the system’s design emphasizes modularity and adaptability, providing critical surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition support without reliance on foreign systems — a key goal under India’s defence indigenisation policy.

Electronic Warfare Resilience: A Strategic Advantage of Kharga Chakra EW-resilient UAV

Electronic warfare threats — such as radio frequency jamming, GPS spoofing, and signal interception — can neutralize conventional drones in hostile environments. The Kharga Chakra UAV incorporates robust EW-resilient features including:

  • Anti-jamming communication protocols
  • Autonomous navigation systems capable of GPS-free routeing
  • Distributed mission computing to sustain operations despite signal disruption

These technologies enable sustained flight and mission continuity, even when adversaries attempt to deny control links or navigation aids.

Operational Validation of Kharga Chakra EW-resilient UAV at Mahajan Firing Range

The operational validation exercise took place at the Mahajan Field Firing Range, one of the Indian Army’s premier testing grounds for artillery and unmanned systems in Rajasthan. The trials were executed by the Deep Strikers of the Kharga Corps — an artillery unit with specialized drone integration capabilities.

Senior commanders on site reported that the platform performed as expected during a series of navigational, endurance, and communication resilience tests — underlining its readiness for further induction.

Strategic Context: Strengthening Air Reconnaissance

Unmanned systems have become indispensable for battlefield awareness, targeting intelligence, and supporting ground manoeuvres.

The Kharga Chakra joins a growing roster of UAVs ranging from tactical hand-launched systems to long-range fixed-wing platforms serving the Indian Army.

This development aligns with a broader Indian defence emphasis on electronic warfare countermeasures and indigenous surveillance capabilities — lessons reinforced by recent military engagements where drone operations played a key role.

One Step Closer to Self-Reliance

The successful validation of the Kharga Chakra UAV is being hailed as a milestone in India’s defence innovation roadmap.

By incorporating advanced EW-resilient technologies and fostering industry-Army collaboration, the platform exemplifies Atmanirbhar Bharat’s vision in defence aerospace.

Officials suggest that with further field trials and production scaling, the Kharga Chakra could soon transition from testing to deployment — enhancing India’s situational awareness along sensitive border sectors.

Importance of Kharga Chakra EW-resilient UAV

Boost to Indigenous R&D: The Kharga Chakra underscores India’s growing domestic expertise in drone technology.

Resilience in Contested Terrains: EW-resilient UAVs provide a tactical edge where adversaries deploy jamming and electronic disruption.

Public-Private Synergy: Partnerships with start-ups are creating a viable defence industrial base.

Border Security Enhancement: Extended range and EW-resilience add depth to surveillance along India’s borders.
