Who Is IPS Avdhesh Dixit? Bihar Officer Who Started a School for Sex Workers’ Children in Muzaffarpur

From IIT to IPS: The Inspiring Journey of Gopalganj SP Avdhesh Dixit. The Officer Whose Police School Is Changing Lives in Bihar
Indian Masterminds Stories

GOPALGANJ: IPS officer Avdhesh Dixit, the Superintendent of Police of Gopalganj district in Bihar and a 2019-batch Bihar cadre officer, has recently gained widespread appreciation for an extraordinary initiative he launched during his tenure in Muzaffarpur. In a recent interview, he revealed how he started a police-run school for the children of sex workers in the city’s red-light area, helping bridge the gap between the police and a marginalized community.

How the School Initiative Began

Avdhesh Dixit was posted in Muzaffarpur in July 2023. During one of his visits to Chaturbhuj Sthan, a large and well-known red-light locality, he realised that the administration had very limited reach among sex workers and their children. He observed that there was a deep barrier that prevented any meaningful connection between the residents and government authorities.

While studying the issue further, Dixit learned about Naseema, the daughter of a sex worker who had been working to improve living conditions in the area. Inspired by her efforts, he partnered with her to establish a school specifically for the children of sex workers. Dixit arranged a space near the police station and extended full support for setting up and running the school. The aim was not only to provide education but also to help children overcome their fear of the police and improve trust between law enforcement and the community.

Career Journey of IPS Avdhesh Dixit

Avdhesh Dixit hails from Rajasthan and is an alumnus of IIT Bombay. After clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2019, he joined the Bihar cadre of the Indian Police Service. His career began in Begusarai, where he served as Sub-Divisional Police Officer. He later held the same role in Paliganj, followed by a posting as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Muzaffarpur. He eventually became the City SP of Muzaffarpur before being appointed as the Superintendent of Police of Gopalganj in September 2024. He is the 50th SP of the district.

Dixit is known within police circles as a strict and disciplined officer. His tough stance on crime has often been credited with bringing down criminal activities in the regions where he has served.

Personal Background

Avdhesh Dixit is married to IPS officer Kamya Mishra, who is currently posted as the Darbhanga Rural SP. She recently submitted her resignation to the police headquarters citing personal reasons, although her resignation has not yet been accepted.

The Love Story of IPS Dixit and Ex-IPS Kamya Mishra

The duo met during their training at the Mussoorie Academy in 2019. Their friendship began during their training sessions and deepened during a field project in Ratlam, where Kamya frequently supported Avdhesh in his assignments. Over time, they realised how much they shared in common, from career ambitions to personal values.

During their training period, Avdhesh proposed to Kamya, who happily accepted. He has often spoken about admiring her caring nature, humility and commitment to service. Both families supported their relationship wholeheartedly. The couple had a court marriage in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and later hosted a grand destination wedding in Udaipur in 2021.

Impact in Gopalganj

Since taking charge as SP of Gopalganj, Dixit has been credited with improving the law enforcement system in the district. His efforts have strengthened accountability within the police force, reduced crime rates through focused action against drug and liquor networks, and increased public confidence in the police. His emphasis on community engagement has helped build trust between citizens and law enforcement, while his push for technological tools has improved operational efficiency and response times.

Role of the Superintendent of Police

The Superintendent of Police is responsible for overseeing crime prevention, maintaining public order, supervising personnel, managing investigations, and coordinating with government agencies. The SP also plays a key role in traffic management, public grievance redressal, and ensuring the overall safety and security of the district. Under Dixit’s leadership, these responsibilities have been handled with a results-oriented approach that has brought positive changes to the district.
