A Distinguished Career in Gujarat Police
Mr. Abhay Chudasama, a 1999-batch IPS officer, is widely regarded as a “supercop” for his exceptional service record and leadership in solving high-profile criminal cases. He began his policing career in the Gujarat State Police Service before being promoted to the IPS in 2004. Over the years, he has served as Inspector General (IG) of Gandhinagar Range and as Principal of the Gujarat Police Academy at Karai, Gandhinagar. Known for his strict discipline and efficient administration, Mr. Chudasama has been instrumental in shaping young officers and strengthening the state’s internal security framework.
Major Contributions to Law and Order
During his service, Mr. Chudasama was involved in numerous crucial investigations, including the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts and the 2009 hooch tragedy that shook Gujarat. His leadership in dismantling organized crime networks and enhancing terror response systems earned him a formidable reputation within law enforcement. Colleagues often credit him for improving coordination between investigation teams and fostering a data-driven approach to policing.
Early Resignation Raises Questions
Mr. Chudasama was scheduled to retire in October 2025 but opted to resign voluntarily nearly ten months early. His decision came shortly after Junagadh SP Mr. Harshad Mehta’s resignation, which was accepted by the government a month prior. While official reasons for his resignation remain undisclosed, reports indicate it was a personal and professional decision, unlinked to any disciplinary matter. The Gujarat government is yet to formally approve his request.
A Thought-Provoking Statement on Community and Politics
In 2024, Mr. Chudasama stirred discussion after speaking at the foundation event of the Karadia Rajput Samaj’s educational complex in Wadhwan, Surendranagar. He addressed the need for unity and humility within the community, emphasizing that divisions and personal egos were hindering progress. His remarks were interpreted as a call for introspection and collective development, underscoring his deep interest in social reform and community empowerment.
Past Controversies and Legal Proceedings
In 2010, Mr. Chudasama faced arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case. After being granted bail by the Gujarat High Court in 2014, he was reinstated into the service and continued his duties with integrity. In 2015, a special CBI court discharged him from all charges in the Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram Prajapati encounter cases, closing a controversial chapter in his career. His reinstatement marked a strong comeback and renewed focus on professional excellence.
Looking Ahead: Focus on Education and Social Growth
Post-resignation, Mr. Chudasama has made it clear that he has no plans to enter politics. Instead, he intends to dedicate his time to educational and developmental initiatives. His commitment to community service and education aligns with his vision of strengthening social harmony and empowering youth through awareness and learning. His exit from the police force signifies not retirement but a transition toward social contribution and grassroots development.
