Chandigarh: The investigation into the mysterious death of Haryana-cadre IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar has hit a major roadblock, with police officials stating that the refusal of the officer’s family to hand over his personal laptop is hampering progress. The laptop, believed to contain a typed suicide note, is key to verifying the cause and nature of his death.
Puran Kumar, a 2001 batch IPS officer, was found dead under circumstances that suggest suicide. However, without critical digital and forensic evidence, including the alleged note, investigators remain uncertain about the actual sequence of events.
Suicide Note Typed on Laptop; Authenticity Yet to Be Verified
Police sources claim that the suicide note was allegedly typed on Puran Kumar’s laptop. Forensic examination is crucial not only to confirm whether the note was indeed authored by him but also to analyze any recent emails, documents, or digital activity that could shed light on his state of mind.
“The laptop may also carry digital fingerprints, including login activity and last modified files,” an investigator said. “We need to confirm if the note was typed by him, when it was written, and who it might have been shared with.”
Fears of Evidence Tampering Grow as Laptop Remains With Family
There is growing concern among investigators that delaying the laptop handover may lead to the loss or manipulation of vital evidence. The Chandigarh Police have reiterated the need for a forensic team to examine the device immediately.
So far, the family has declined to submit the laptop, reportedly citing privacy concerns and emotional trauma. Police officials stress that without the laptop, establishing a timeline or motive is proving difficult.
Post-Mortem Report Critical to Determine Suicide or Foul Play
Apart from digital evidence, the post-mortem report is expected to play a crucial role in confirming whether it was indeed a suicide or if foul play is involved. The report will include toxicology findings and other physiological details that could corroborate or contradict the suicide theory.
Only once both the laptop is examined and the autopsy report is received will police be able to present a solid case in court.
Political Reactions and Public Questions
Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi expressed condolences and demanded a thorough and impartial investigation. “It is disturbing that an IPS officer, whose wife is an IAS officer and brother-in-law is an MLA, had to take such a step,” Channi said. “This raises serious questions that must be answered.”
What Investigators Are Looking For on the Laptop
- Authorship and timestamp of the suicide note
- Recent email communications and drafts
- Personal journal or document entries indicating distress
- Search history or digital footprints
Biometric access records (e.g., fingerprint or facial recognition login)
