Jharkhand Chief Minister Mr. Hemant Soren on Monday paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary tribal freedom fighters of the Santhal Hool Kranti — Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano — at a solemn ceremony held at Jharkhand Bhavan in New Delhi. The event, commemorating Hool Diwas, was attended by senior leaders including Tundi MLA Mr. Mathura Mahato and Gandey MLA Ms. Kalpana Soren.

Mr. Soren described June 30 as a historic date that marks the first tribal-led spark in India’s freedom struggle. “The Hool Kranti of 1855 was more than a revolt against British colonial rule — it was a mass awakening for rights over jal, jungle, and zameen,” he said. He emphasised that the legacy of this uprising must be preserved and honoured as part of the country’s collective history.
Expressing regret for missing the official Hool Diwas event at Bhognadih in Sahibganj, the birthplace of the movement, Mr. Soren cited the ill health of his father and JMM patriarch, Mr. Shibu Soren. Referring to him as a “torchbearer of the Hool legacy,” the Chief Minister said his father’s life has been devoted to the fight against feudal oppression and for tribal rights. “Guruji has always embodied the spirit of the Hool movement. The entire state prays for his recovery,” he said.
Taking to social media, Mr. Soren wrote: “Hool Diwas is not just a day of remembrance, but a day of resolution. Hool is our strength, our identity. Our struggle will continue — for a tribal religious code and for the preservation of our culture, language, and identity.”
He also addressed the media about the worsening flood situation in Jharkhand due to incessant rainfall. “The state government is closely monitoring the rising water levels in rivers and is fully prepared to support all affected citizens,” he assured.
