Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh: Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, located adjacent to the Nepal border in Bahraich district, is rapidly gaining fame not only for its lush natural beauty but also for the frequent sightings of Bengal tigers. Once a rare spectacle, tiger sightings during jungle safaris here have now become common, turning Katarniaghat into a sought-after destination for wildlife and tiger tourism.
Tiger Population Doubles in Three Years, Making Sightings Easier
Wildlife experts estimate that the number of Bengal tigers in Katarniaghat has more than doubled over the past three years, currently surpassing the 100 mark. This sharp increase was confirmed by the 2022 tiger census report, which recorded the highest growth in tiger numbers within this sanctuary. Since the last couple of months, especially with changes in weather, tourists have regularly spotted tigers crossing paths during jungle safaris.
The heat has made tigers and tigresses more visible as they often rest under the shade of trees along Bandha Road, giving tourists a rare opportunity to observe these majestic animals closely.
Tourists Thrilled as Tiger Sightings Boost Sanctuary Tourism
Tourists are exhilarated by the close encounters with free-roaming tigers and eagerly share these moments on social media, posting selfies and videos from safe distances. These posts have created a viral buzz, promoting Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary as a premier tiger tourism destination. Consequently, the sanctuary has witnessed its highest tourist footfall in the past three years.
Forest Department Statement Highlights Conservation Success
Suraj Kumar, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Katarniaghat, expressed satisfaction over the improved tiger sightings. “Every day during jungle safaris, tourists are encountering tigers. This not only enhances tourism but also signifies successful tiger conservation efforts in the sanctuary,” he said.
Challenges Ahead: Managing Growing Tiger Population and Habitat Constraints
While the surge in tiger numbers is celebrated, wildlife experts like BD Lakhmani caution about the challenges ahead. The natural environment favorable to tigers has boosted their birth rate, but the growing population is shrinking the available habitat in Katarniaghat. This reduction in space could potentially lead to conflicts among wildlife species.
Katarniaghat Sanctuary is divided into seven ranges, and the presence of tigers across all these ranges highlights the sanctuary’s ecological significance. However, managing the balance between tiger conservation and habitat sustainability remains a critical priority.
