In the drought-prone Kutch region of Gujarat, a powerful community movement is transforming lives through water conservation. The Jal Mandir Abhiyan, led by the Kutch Fodder Fruit & Forest Development Trust, has emerged as a beacon of hope for villages long affected by water scarcity. Since its launch in 2012, the campaign has already constructed nearly 390 ponds, with a target of crossing 500 ponds by 2026.
A People’s Movement for Water Security
Unlike many government-driven projects, Jal Mandir Abhiyan thrives on grassroots participation. Villagers, farmers, NGOs, donors, and even schoolchildren are active contributors to the initiative. From providing tractors and JCB machines to volunteering manpower and resources, local residents themselves form the backbone of this effort.
Geologist Mr. Jayesh Lalka, Director of the Trust, highlighted the spirit of collaboration: “When we started this programme in 2012, we called upon people to support us. All excavation material, transportation, and even manpower came from villagers, farmers, and livestock owners. Together, we have built around 390 ponds, and our vision is to reach more than 500 by 2026.”
Success Stories from Villages
One notable example comes from a village where elders Mr. Narayanbhai Kerai and Mr. Manjibhai Pindoriya led the construction of a pond with support from the local panchayat, donors, and technical guidance from Mr. Lalka. The outcome was remarkable: the pond not only ensured water for people and cattle but also improved groundwater recharge, benefiting the entire ecosystem.
Reviving Ecosystems and Inspiring Youth
The impact of the movement is visible even in educational institutions. At a school in Bhuj, students witnessed a barren piece of land near their campus transform into a vibrant green zone after a pond was built. The site has since attracted birds, animals, and new vegetation, showing how water conservation directly contributes to ecological balance.
A Shared Mission for the Future
From the wisdom of village elders to the enthusiasm of schoolchildren, Jal Mandir Abhiyan has united Kutch in a shared mission of resilience against climate challenges. The initiative proves that sustainable solutions to water scarcity can be built through community-driven action. One pond at a time, the people of Kutch are reclaiming their future and laying the foundation for long-term water security.
