Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav announced a historic achievement on December 11, 2025, declaring the state completely free from Naxalism, ending nearly 35 years of insurgency. Calling it a “golden chapter” in the state’s history, Dr Yadav credited the success to the state government’s rehabilitation policies and the dedication of police officers and central security forces engaged in anti-Naxal operations.
“This achievement under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah is one of the greatest milestones of our government,” Dr Yadav said. He noted that Naxalism had long been a barrier to development and had created fear among ordinary citizens.
Decades of Struggle Ended
Naxalite activities began in Madhya Pradesh between 1988–1990, affecting districts such as Mandla, Dindori, and Balaghat. Over the decades, insurgents disrupted government development programs, attacked civilians, and targeted police personnel. Several citizens and security officers lost their lives during confrontations with Naxals. One notable incident was the killing of former minister Likhiram Kaware in Balaghat.
The government initiated the “Rehabilitation to Revival” program, offering insurgents a chance to surrender and reintegrate into society. This program, combined with coordinated anti-Naxal operations, led to the surrender of the last two Naxal leaders in Balaghat, effectively ending the insurgency in the state.
Key Achievements of the Anti-Naxal Campaign
- Complete Naxal eradication on December 11, 2025, 35 years after the insurgency began.
- 10 hardcore Naxals surrendered in 2025 under the government’s rehabilitation scheme, with a total bounty of ₹2.36 crore offered on them.
- In 16 encounters/exchanges of fire in 2025, 13 hardcore Naxals were killed, and one was apprehended.
- The June 2025 Balaghat encounter resulted in the elimination of four Naxals, including three women, with automatic weapons and ammunition seized.
- Over 850 posts for special task forces were sanctioned in Naxal-affected districts to strengthen security operations.
Police and Security Forces Honoured
Dr Yadav personally visited Balaghat to honour officers and personnel involved in the operations, promoting them for their bravery and dedication. He praised the courage, discipline, and professionalism of state police and central security forces, whose relentless efforts led to the eradication of a decades-long threat to development and peace.
Looking Ahead
The Chief Minister emphasized that rehabilitation and development will continue in formerly Naxal-affected areas, ensuring that these regions fully integrate into Madhya Pradesh’s growth story. A system is also being established to prevent any resurgence of extremist movements, with coordination among neighboring states.
Dr Yadav said, “With Naxalism removed, the state can now accelerate development, empower citizens, and ensure peace and prosperity for generations to come.”
