Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Cabinet has approved Rs 3,750 crore for constructing a new Bombay High Court complex on 30.16 acres in Bandra East. The modern facility aims to ease overcrowding and improve court infrastructure.
Modern Complex to Feature 75 Courtrooms and Judicial Facilities
According to the cabinet, the new complex will house 75 fully equipped courtrooms, judges’ chambers, staff offices, and residential quarters. It will also include an arbitration and mediation centre, library, auditorium, and extensive parking.
Officials described the project as “a major infrastructure initiative” and assured timely completion. The new building will replace the historic Gothic-style main seat of the Bombay High Court, which was constructed in 1878.
Historic Building Struggling with Overcrowding
The existing heritage structure was originally designed for only 15 judges. Today, it accommodates 94 judges with 29 courtrooms. Lawyers and litigants have long raised concerns over overcrowded corridors, cramped courtrooms, and insufficient storage space, which hinder smooth judicial functioning.
The new Bandra East complex is expected to modernize the court’s infrastructure, provide relief from congestion, and support efficient judicial processes.
