The Ministry of External Affairs has recently mandated senior diplomat, Mr. Ajit Vinayak Gupte to take charge as the new Indian Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. Presently, Officer Gupte, a 1991-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is serving as the Indian Ambassador to Egypt and he is expected to assume his new role shortly.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the appointment, stating, “Shri Ajit Vinayak Gupte (IFS: 1991), presently Ambassador of India to Egypt, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Federal Republic of Germany.“
Prior to his role in Egypt, Mr. Gupte served as the Ambassador to Denmark from November 2017 to March 2021. His career includes significant experience in managing relations with China, having served as Under Secretary (China) from 1995 to 1998, and holding postings in Hong Kong (1998-2000) and Beijing (2000-2004). He also gained valuable insights into India’s neighbourhood while serving as the First Secretary/Counsellor in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 2004 to 2008.
Additionally, Gupte served as the Deputy Director General at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) from 2008 to 2010. He was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Berlin from 2010 to 2014, where he also acted as Chargé d’Affaires for nine months. Later, he served as Joint Secretary (Haj) for one year and then as Joint Secretary (Development Partnership Administration) from 2015 to 2017, overseeing Lines of Credit for various countries, including India’s neighbours and African nations.
