Bhopal: Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Mohan Yadav, highlighted the importance of empowering panchayats and promoting water conservation during the state-level Watershed Conference and workshop held in Bhopal. The three-day event, organized at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre, is set to continue until November 26 and has brought together over 2,000 elected representatives, officials, and subject matter experts from across the state.
Focus on Panchayat Empowerment and Local Development
Addressing the participants, Dr. Yadav stressed that sustainable development at the village level requires strengthening the role of panchayats. “Today, the well comes to the thirsty, not the thirsty to the well,” he remarked, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting panchayats in local development initiatives. He urged authorities to provide panchayats with the necessary powers and resources to execute their responsibilities effectively.
The Chief Minister highlighted that continuous efforts are underway to conserve ponds, tanks, wells, and other water bodies across the state. Active engagement by government officers and staff in watershed management has led to several districts and organizations receiving state-level awards for their exemplary work in water conservation.

Awards and Recognition for Outstanding Work
During the conference, districts and officials demonstrating exceptional performance were honored. District Collectors from Khandwa, Raisen, and Balaghat were among those recognized for their significant contributions. In the pond and tank category, Balaghat, Anuppur, and associated organizations were awarded for their remarkable achievements in water management.
Prahlad Patel, Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, noted that the panchayat system plays a crucial role in the nation’s overall development. He encouraged sarpanches, secretaries, and other local representatives to share their experiences and best practices during the event, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among participants.
New Initiatives for Panchayat Development and Farmer Support
Dr. Yadav announced several key measures to further strengthen local governance and rural development. Reports and suggestions from vice-presidents of zila and janpad panchayats will be systematically reviewed, and actionable recommendations will be implemented.
Additionally, the state government is offering up to 90% subsidy to farmers under the Sotar Pump Scheme, aimed at promoting efficient water usage for irrigation. The initiatives are part of Madhya Pradesh’s broader strategy to develop self-reliant panchayats and ensure sustainable village-level growth.
Promoting Coordination, Infrastructure, and Self-Reliance
The conference also emphasized enhancing coordination between panchayats and local officials, supporting rural development projects, and improving water management practices. Under programs like the Pradhan Mantri Janman and PM Awas schemes, infrastructure development in remote areas, including roads and housing, is being accelerated.
By integrating watershed management with panchayat empowerment, the state aims to create sustainable rural ecosystems, strengthen governance, and promote self-reliance among village communities.
