Mumbai: In a shocking case of fraud, Mumbai Police have arrested a man posing as a CID officer who allegedly conned a hotelier out of ₹60 lakh by promising to help his son pass the UPSC Civil Services Examination. The fraudster’s accomplice, claiming to be a senior UPSC official, is still on the run.
The arrested individual has been identified as Yakub Gafur Shaikh, a commerce graduate who pretended to be a CID officer to gain the trust of victims. His associate, Vijay Chaudhary, allegedly impersonated a senior official within the UPSC system, claiming to wield the power to manipulate exam results.
The Victim: A Father’s Desperate Attempt for His Son’s Success
The victim, Irshad Khan, a hotelier from Mumbai’s Malvani area, sought help for his son, Saddam Khan, who had failed the UPSC exam four times. While preparing for his fifth attempt, Saddam came into contact with Yakub Shaikh, who frequently visited their hotel and introduced himself as a CID officer with high-level contacts.
Yakub soon gained Irshad’s trust and introduced him to Vijay Chaudhary, who claimed to be a Delhi-based UPSC Commissioner. Over several conversations—both in person and via phone—Chaudhary assured Irshad that Saddam’s exam results could be “handled,” provided he paid a large sum of money.
False Promises and Emotional Manipulation
To make the scam believable, Chaudhary posed as a high-ranking Delhi official, even claiming to be the Chief Officer of UPSC. Both accused individuals convinced Irshad that exam result manipulation was possible and that payment would guarantee his son’s selection.
Between cash and online transfers, Irshad ended up paying approximately ₹60 lakh to the fraudsters. However, when the UPSC results were released, Saddam’s name was missing once again.
When Irshad confronted them, the duo offered bizarre excuses. In a particularly offensive claim, they blamed the candidate’s religion for his non-selection—a manipulative tactic to evade further questioning.
Complaint and Arrest
Realizing he had been defrauded, Irshad Khan lodged a complaint at the Malwani Police Station. Acting swiftly, Mumbai Police arrested Yakub Gafur Shaikh, who was later produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.
The hunt is still on for Vijay Chaudhary, the co-accused who remains absconding.
