New Delhi: The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest steel-making company under the Ministry of Steel, has appointed two senior officials to key leadership positions on its Board of Directors. Surajit Mishra and Chitta Ranjan Mohapatra, both seasoned executives within the organization, have taken charge as Directors of major production units effective July 15, 2025.
Surajit Mishra Named Director (In-Charge), Burnpur & Durgapur Steel Plants
Surajit Mishra, currently Executive Director at SAIL, has been elevated as Director (In-Charge) for Burnpur and Durgapur Steel Plants. Mishra joined SAIL on July 4, 1990, as a Management Trainee (Technical) at Visvesvaraya Iron & Steel Limited (VISL), and steadily rose through the ranks over a distinguished three-decade career.
An alumnus of the College of Engineering and Technology (CET), Bhubaneswar—now Odisha University of Technology and Research (OUTR)—Mishra holds a B.E. in Electrical Engineering. He has worked extensively in Electrical Maintenance, Process Automation, and Blast Furnace Projects across SAIL’s plants, with a special focus on modernizing electrical drive systems and automation frameworks to enhance production efficiency.

Chitta Ranjan Mohapatra Takes Over as Director (In-Charge), Bhilai Steel Plant
Simultaneously, Chitta Ranjan Mohapatra, also Executive Director at SAIL, has assumed charge as Director (In-Charge), Bhilai Steel Plant, another key production unit of the company.
Mohapatra began his journey at SAIL as a Management Trainee (Technical) at the Air Separation Plant of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). Over a span of 34 years, he held various critical roles in RSP’s operations. He was appointed General Manager (Utilities) in June 2017, and later took over as General Manager (Services) in May 2019. He further advanced to Head of the Materials Management Department on October 29, 2020, exercising the powers of Executive Director (Materials Management).

These appointments come as part of SAIL’s larger vision to boost operational leadership, drive technological advancement, and improve productivity across its integrated steel plants. The elevation of two experienced internal leaders reinforces the company’s commitment to nurturing talent from within its system while placing strategic focus on plant-level modernization and efficient material handling.
