Travel Made Easier: NHAI to Install QR Code Sign Boards with Project Information on National Highways

New initiative aims to boost transparency, safety, and ease of commuting for highway users across India
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: In a significant step towards modernizing highway infrastructure and enhancing the travel experience, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the installation of QR Code-enabled Project Information Sign Boards along National Highway stretches across the country.

The initiative is part of NHAI’s ongoing efforts to bring transparency, digital accessibility, and commuter convenience under its “Ease of Commuting” initiative.

What Are QR Code Sign Boards?

These vertical sign boards will feature scannable Quick Response (QR) codes, which will allow commuters to instantly access project-specific details and emergency contact information using their smartphones.

Each QR code will be linked to a webpage or system that provides details such as:

  • National Highway number and chainage
  • Project length and timelines (construction/maintenance)
  • Contact numbers: Highway Patrol, Toll Manager, Project Manager, Resident Engineer
  • Emergency Helpline: 1033
  • NHAI field office details

Info on Nearby Facilities Also Available

In addition to project data, the QR codes will also offer geo-specific information on nearby public facilities such as:

  • Hospitals
  • Petrol pumps
  • Public toilets
  • Police stations
  • Restaurants
  • e-Charging stations
  • Vehicle service and puncture repair shops
  • Truck lay-byes and toll plazas

This information is aimed at helping travelers make informed decisions in real time, especially during emergencies.

Strategic Placement for Maximum Visibility

To ensure commuters can easily locate and use the QR code boards, NHAI will install them at high-traffic and strategic locations, including:

  • Toll plazas
  • Wayside amenities
  • Rest areas
  • Start and end points of highways
  • Truck lay-bye zones
  • Key signage points along the highway

The vertical design and prominent display will improve visibility even for fast-moving vehicles.

Benefits: Transparency, Safety, and Awareness

NHAI’s QR Code Sign Board initiative is expected to bring multiple benefits:

  • Enhanced transparency about highway projects
  • Improved road safety through quick access to emergency services
  • Convenience through location-specific public service information
  • Higher user awareness of ongoing construction and highway maintenance

NHAI’s Digital Push Continues

This move is in line with NHAI’s broader push for digital transformation in road infrastructure, following the implementation of FASTag, app-based toll payment systems, and digitized project monitoring tools.

By making detailed information accessible directly to users, NHAI is positioning itself as a citizen-friendly, transparent, and technology-enabled authority.
