New Delhi: In a significant move to enhance road safety and provide a seamless travel experience, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio. The collaboration will introduce a telecom-based safety alert system across the National Highway network, leveraging Jio’s 4G and 5G networks to deliver real-time safety alerts to travellers.
Telecom-Based Safety Alerts for Hazardous Zones
Under the partnership, travellers on National Highways will receive advance warnings on their mobile phones when approaching identified risk locations such as:
- Accident-prone stretches
- Stray cattle zones
- Fog-affected areas
- Emergency diversion points
The initiative aims to enhance road safety by providing timely information, allowing commuters to adjust speed and driving behaviour before entering potentially dangerous zones. Alerts will be sent via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls to ensure that all users receive notifications in real time.

Integration with NHAI Digital Platforms
The safety alert system will be phased into NHAI’s existing digital ecosystem, including:
- ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile application
- Emergency helpline number 1033
The automated system will operate for all Jio mobile users traveling on or near National Highways, providing early warnings before entering hazardous zones. Importantly, the solution leverages existing telecom towers, enabling quick deployment without additional roadside hardware.
Strategic Partnership Leveraging Digital Infrastructure
This collaboration represents a strategic use of telecom infrastructure to improve public safety. Reliance Jio, which serves over 500 million subscribers, will provide the technological backbone for the system, ensuring wide coverage and real-time communication for National Highway users across India.
Expected Impact and Benefits
The NHAI-Jio safety alert system is expected to:
- Reduce accidents and casualties on National Highways
- Increase awareness of road hazards in real time
- Promote safer driving behaviour among commuters
- Enhance traveller confidence by integrating safety alerts with emergency services
This initiative highlights the innovative use of digital technology to make India’s roadways safer while also improving the overall travel experience for millions of National Highway users.
