New Delhi: State-owned hydropower major NHPC Limited is set to initiate the commissioning of three units of 250 MW each at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric (HE) Project starting June 2025, the company announced in a regulatory filing on Monday.
The commissioning process is contingent upon final approval from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), NHPC stated.
“It is now anticipated that the process of commissioning of 3 units (250 MW each) of Subansiri Lower HE Project shall be taken up from June 2025, subject to receipt of NDSA,” the company said in its exchange filing.
The remaining five units, each with a capacity of 250 MW, are expected to be completed in a phased manner by May 2026.
India’s Largest Hydroelectric Project
Being constructed under the aegis of the Ministry of Power, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is the largest hydroelectric project ever undertaken in India. Designed as a run-of-river project with water storage, it is being built on the Subansiri River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra.
Strategically located near North Lakhimpur on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the project is expected to generate 7,421.59 million units (MU) of electricity annually in a 90% dependable year.
The project site is accessible via Nagaon (railhead) and Lilabari or Dibrugarh (airports).
Once operational, Subansiri Lower is expected to significantly contribute to India’s clean energy capacity and support grid stability in the northeastern region, a key component of India’s long-term energy security and sustainability goals.
