New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind milestone for Jammu & Kashmir, the Northern Railways has successfully carried out simultaneous unloading of two NMG (New Modified Goods) rakes at separate terminals in the Union Territory, a move that significantly enhances the logistics capacity and efficiency of the region.
According to Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, the dual unloading was executed at the Bari Brahmana Goods Shed in Jammu and the Anantnag Goods Terminal in Kashmir Valley — both part of the Jammu Division.
Loaded with Maruti Suzuki Vehicles from Gurugram
The rakes were loaded with Maruti Suzuki vehicles and transported from Gurugram (Delhi Division) to their respective destinations in J&K.
- 113 vehicles were unloaded at Bari Brahmana (Jammu)
- 118 vehicles were unloaded at Anantnag (Kashmir)
The consignment included popular models such as Alto, Brezza, Eeco, Dzire, Wagon R, S-Presso, Ignis, Super Carry, and Ertiga — a clear indicator of the growing consumer demand and trust in railway-based logistics by automobile manufacturers.
Railways Emerging as Preferred Mode for Bulk Transport
Speaking about the achievement, Singhal said:
“This is the first time such a large number of vehicles have been unloaded at both goods terminals of the Jammu division in a single day. It marks a significant milestone in Northern Railways’ freight handling capabilities.”
He added that Indian Railways is rapidly becoming the preferred logistics partner for trade and industry due to its cost-efficiency, speed, safety, and eco-friendly operations.
Changing the Logistics Landscape in Jammu & Kashmir
The simultaneous rake unloading signals a shift in preference from road to rail, particularly in automobile logistics, which traditionally relied heavily on road transport.
“There has always been a strong bias toward road transport in the region. But now, the economic advantages, safety, and environmental benefits of railways are drawing more business to our freight network,” said Singhal.
Boosting Multimodal Logistics and Green Transportation
This move also aligns with Indian Railways’ broader goals of:
- Enhancing multimodal logistics across the country
- Reducing carbon footprint through fuel-efficient bulk transport
- Strengthening supply chains in difficult-to-reach areas like Jammu & Kashmir
- Enabling safe, timely delivery of perishable and high-value goods
“This is not just a logistics achievement; it’s a step forward in sustainable, reliable and future-ready transport infrastructure in the Union Territory,” Singhal emphasized.
