New Delhi/Ranchi: In a major boost to India’s power generation capacity, NTPC Limited, the nation’s largest energy conglomerate, has commenced commercial operation of the first 800 MW unit at the Patratu Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) in Jharkhand. The milestone marks a significant step in strengthening the power infrastructure of the eastern region and meeting the nation’s growing electricity demand.

A Major Milestone for NTPC Group

The Unit-1 (800 MW) of Patratu STPP, Phase-I (3×800 MW), began commercial operation at 00:00 hours on November 5, 2025, officially adding to NTPC’s operational capacity. With this addition, the NTPC Group’s total installed and commercial capacity has now reached an impressive 84,849 MW, further consolidating its position as India’s leading power utility.

The Patratu Super Thermal Power Project, situated in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, is operated by Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited. PVUNL is a joint venture between NTPC (74%) and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) (26%).

Project Details and Significance

Phase-I of the Patratu STPP comprises three supercritical units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, totaling 2,400 MW. The commissioning of the first unit represents a crucial advancement in Jharkhand’s power infrastructure, as 85% of the electricity generated from this project is allocated to meet the state’s growing energy requirements.

The project employs supercritical technology, which enhances efficiency and reduces fuel consumption and emissions — aligning with NTPC’s commitment to sustainability and cleaner coal-based power generation.

Boosting Jharkhand’s Power Supply and Regional Development

The operationalization of the first unit will significantly strengthen Jharkhand’s power supply network, ensuring reliable electricity access for households, industries, and key infrastructure projects across the state. The project is expected to play a vital role in supporting regional economic growth, improving grid stability, and reducing power deficits.

The remaining two units under Phase-I are progressing steadily, and once fully commissioned, the Patratu STPP will emerge as one of the most advanced and efficient thermal power stations in eastern India.

NTPC’s Commitment to India’s Energy Future

This milestone underscores NTPC’s ongoing mission to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable power to the nation. As part of its strategic roadmap, NTPC continues to expand its generation portfolio through a mix of thermal, renewable, and hydro projects, supporting India’s vision of achieving energy security and carbon reduction goals.

With the successful commissioning of the Patratu unit, NTPC once again demonstrates its leadership in building state-of-the-art power infrastructure, driving India’s energy transition, and empowering the states it serves.
