New Delhi: Senior bureaucrat Piyush Goyal, a 1994-batch IAS officer of the Nagaland cadre, has officially assumed charge as the Secretary in the Ministry of Mines.
Before this appointment, Goyal was serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he played a pivotal role in enhancing data and intelligence integration for national security. His leadership at NATGRID was credited with driving technology-led governance and strengthening inter-agency coordination.
He succeeds V. L. Kantha Rao, a 1992-batch IAS officer, who has now taken charge as Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.
Key Role Ahead in Mines Ministry
The Ministry of Mines is central to India’s mineral resource management, exploration, and policy-making. With the growing demand for critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements—vital for renewable energy, EV batteries, and advanced electronics—the ministry’s role has become increasingly strategic.
Goyal’s appointment is seen as crucial in strengthening sustainable mining practices, boosting private investments, and advancing India’s self-reliance in mineral resources. His experience in data-driven governance is expected to aid in modernizing the sector with technology integration, transparency, and efficiency.
Broader Bureaucratic Reshuffle
His appointment is part of a larger bureaucratic reshuffle by the central government, which recently reassigned several senior IAS officers across ministries to align with policy priorities.
