The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is exploring the possibility of assigning Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) as the exclusive developer of natural gas infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. A public consultation note has been issued, inviting stakeholder feedback by April 30.
To support the government’s plan for a gas-based power plant through NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) Ltd, PNGRB is assessing an integrated approach that combines City Gas Distribution (CGD) with LNG supply for power generation. Given IOC’s established presence in the region as the primary supplier of petrol, diesel, LPG, and aviation fuel, it has been identified as a key player in this initiative.
PNGRB has stated that if no other companies express interest within 30 days, the authorisation for CGD development will be granted to IOC. However, if multiple entities submit proposals, a competitive bidding process will be initiated. The move aligns with efforts to transition Andaman’s power generation from diesel to cleaner gas-based energy, with NVVN developing a 50 MW LNG power plant.
