New Delhi: Following the retirement of Prabodh Seth (IRS-IT:1989) on June 30, 2025, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially reallocated the major portfolios previously held by him to two senior Members of the Board.
In an order issued on Wednesday (July 16, 2025), the CBDT outlined the division of responsibilities, ensuring continuity in administrative functions and zonal supervision.
Key Assignments:
Pankaj Kumar Mishra (IRS-IT:1989), currently Member (Tax Payers Services & Reforms), has been given additional charge of Member (Administration). In this capacity, he will also oversee:
- Principal Director General of Income Tax (Human Resource Development)
- Principal DGIT (Training)
- DGIT (Vigilance)
Sanjay Bahadur (IRS-IT:1989), Member (Income Tax), has been entrusted with additional responsibility for the West Zone, which includes critical income tax jurisdictions of Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.
Background:
Prabodh Seth, who retired on June 30, had been serving as Member (Administration). His portfolio included some of the most critical verticals within the CBDT:
- Human Resource Development
- Training
- Vigilance
- Oversight of the West Zone
With the West Zone being home to India’s financial capital and several high-revenue tax regions, the Board has acted swiftly to redistribute responsibilities among senior officers with significant domain expertise and cadre experience.
Organizational Stability and Leadership Continuity
Both officers belong to the 1989 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) and bring extensive experience to their new additional roles. The redistribution of portfolios comes at a crucial time as the department continues its work on digital tax reforms, tax compliance monitoring, and capacity building.
The internal restructuring also reflects CBDT’s approach to ensuring leadership continuity, especially across zones and departments critical to policy execution and taxpayer interface.
