Patratu: Ashok Kumar Sehgal has officially assumed charge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) on July 6, 2025. His appointment marks a significant step forward for PVUNL, a key joint venture between NTPC Limited and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), established to develop a state-of-the-art 4000 MW thermal power plant in Jharkhand.
First Phase of 2400 MW Project in Advanced Stage
The first phase of the PVUNL project includes 3 units of 800 MW each (3×800 MW), totaling 2400 MW, and is progressing rapidly towards commissioning. Under Sehgal’s leadership, the focus will be on accelerating project execution, ensuring timely delivery, and maintaining the highest standards of operational efficiency and sustainability.

A Veteran with Over 35 Years at NTPC
Mr. Ashok Kumar Sehgal brings a wealth of experience, having served more than 35 years with NTPC in various strategic and technical roles. Starting as an Executive Trainee in 1989 in the Commissioning and Testing Department, he has since made major contributions in:
- Operations and Maintenance
- Turbine Technology
- Project Management
- Corporate Monitoring
- Overall Plant Operations
Most notably, he served as Business Unit Head (BUH) at Talcher Kaniha, where under his leadership the project achieved several key performance milestones, emerging as one of NTPC’s leading power stations.
Academic Excellence and Global Exposure
Mr. Sehgal holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.Tech in Power Engineering from IIT Delhi. He further sharpened his managerial capabilities through:
- Executive Management Training at IIM Bangalore
- PG Diploma in Finance from IGNOU
- Advanced Management Training in Silicon Valley, USA
His well-rounded academic background, combined with global exposure, positions him to lead PVUNL with strategic foresight and technical acumen.

Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), established on October 15, 2015, is a joint venture—74 % held by NTPC and 26 % by Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL)—to modernize and expand the Patratu Thermal Power Station in Jharkhand. PVUNL is constructing a 4,000 MW coal‑based super‑thermal power project in two phases.
