New Delhi: In a significant leadership transition, Bhupender Gupta, currently Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited, has been selected for the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited. The decision was made following an interview conducted by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) on June 11, 2025.
Selection Awaits ACC Clearance
Following standard procedure, PESB will now forward Bhupender Gupta’s name to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for final approval. The formal appointment will take place after vigilance clearances and ACC nod.
Gupta’s elevation to CMD will mark the culmination of a competitive selection process involving several top executives from across India’s power and public enterprise sectors.
Change in Leadership at NHPC
The selection comes ahead of the retirement of current CMD Raj Kumar Chaudhary, who is scheduled to step down on June 30, 2025. Chaudhary had assumed the role on August 6, 2024, and has overseen several strategic developments at NHPC during his tenure.

Interview Process and Final Shortlist
A total of nine candidates were interviewed by the PESB panel. The final list of applicants included–
- Suprakash Adhikari – Director (Technical), NHPC Limited
- Ashok Kumar Nauriyal – Executive Director, NHPC Limited
- Ramesh Mukhiya – Managing Director, NHPC Limited
- Bhupender Gupta – Director (Technical), THDC India Limited
- Rajesh Kumar Singh – CMD, Bridge and Roof Company (India) Limited
- Thangarajan Subash Chandira Bosh – CEO, REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd
- Krishna Mohan Srivastava – Sr. GM, BSNL
- Ali Shah – Executive Director, Power Finance Corporation Ltd
- Mukta Shekhar (IRAS:1994) – Joint Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj
Mr Gupta emerged as the PESB’s top choice following the evaluation.
