Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Coal, celebrated its 50th Foundation Day at its headquarters in Kolkata, attended by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, Mr. Vikram Dev Dutt (1993-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer). The event not only honoured CIL’s significant contributions to India’s energy sector over the last five decades but also set the stage for its future initiatives and strategic vision.

Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy

Coal India Limited (CIL) is the largest coal producer in India, playing a crucial role in meeting the country’s energy demands. With a commitment to sustainability, CIL is also diversifying into renewable energy and enhancing community welfare initiatives.

During the celebration, Minister Reddy launched the Golden Jubilee logo and unveiled the mascot ‘Angara,’ symbolizing CIL’s vital role in the energy sector and the strength of coal miners, inspired by the Royal Bengal Tiger. He praised CIL’s achievements and emphasized the need to boost coal production and supply while focusing on miners’ welfare and community rehabilitation.

Mr. Reddy noted the importance of the Coal Mines Special Provision (CMSP) Act, enacted in 2015, which has facilitated transparent coal mine auctions and increased production for key sectors like steel and power. He expressed confidence in CIL’s ability to thrive in an open market while acknowledging the country’s simultaneous investment in renewable energy and climate change solutions. CIL’s efforts in diversifying into thermal power and critical minerals were also commended.

Union Coal Secretary IAS Vikram Dev Dutt

Union Coal Secretary IAS Vikram Dev Dutt highlighted CIL’s competitive pricing compared to imported coal, noting a significant increase in coal stocks at power plants. He urged CIL to adapt its processes and improve efficiency in response to evolving market dynamics.

The event also featured the release of the Strategy Report on Coal and Lignite Exploration, the inauguration of the Mine Closure Portal, and the announcement of a 50 MW solar power plant at the Nigahi project. The Minister concluded by recognizing outstanding performers within CIL, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to sustainable growth and energy security as it prepares to tackle future challenges.
