Chandigarh: The Punjab government is set to roll out ‘Khed Pitara’, a first-of-its-kind play-based learning kit in public primary schools across the state. Designed for children aged 3 to 8 years, covering nursery to Class 2, the initiative aims to make learning joyful, interactive, and meaningful, moving away from traditional rote methods.
Punjab’s Education Minister, Harjot Singh Bains, emphasized that the program will help children experience schooling as a journey of discovery, creativity, and confidence-building, rather than pressure and memorization.
Investment and Scale of the Initiative
The state government has allocated around Rs 9.3 crore for the project, which will benefit approximately 7.5 lakh children in foundational stage classes. The kits are set to be distributed across 12,856 government primary schools by April 1, 2026.
All materials are provided in Punjabi to ensure better comprehension and meaningful learning for young children. The kit includes:

Children will actively participate in storytelling, collaborative games, hands-on activities, and interactive exercises, making learning natural, enjoyable, and stress-free.
Supporting Teachers and Strengthening Classrooms
The initiative also provides structured support for teachers, equipping them with activity-based teaching materials and guidelines to implement the kits effectively. This ensures classrooms become interactive, inclusive, and child-friendly environments.
By addressing learning gaps at an early stage, the government aims to reduce long-term disparities, preparing children for higher education and emerging opportunities.
Punjab’s Long-Term Investment in Human Capital
Officials stated that the Mann government views foundational education as a strategic investment in the state’s human capital. By fostering curiosity, confidence, and creativity in children from ages 3 to 8, the program lays a strong foundation for future academic success and leadership.
