Chandigarh: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday met the grieving family of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who died of a gunshot wound at his home in Chandigarh on October 7. Offering his condolences, Gandhi issued a scathing attack on the Haryana government, calling the case not just a personal tragedy but a collective humiliation of the Dalit community.
“PM Modi, CM Saini Must Act Immediately”
Calling it a “tragedy for all Dalits”, Gandhi said the death of the 2001-batch Dalit IPS officer has revealed deep-rooted caste discrimination and institutional failure within the system.
“This is not just about one family’s respect. This is about all Dalits. It sends a message to crores of Dalits in the country — no matter how successful or intelligent you are, you can still be crushed,” Rahul Gandhi said.
He demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini act without further delay and fulfill the commitments made to Kumar’s family.

Gandhi Alleges ‘Systematic Discrimination’ Against Officer
After meeting the bereaved family, Gandhi stated that Y Puran Kumar was demoralised and targeted in service, calling it “systematic discrimination” meant to break his spirit and derail his career.
“He was an IPS officer, a symbol of success, but even he wasn’t spared. The government’s silence and delay are part of a wider pattern that must be broken,” Gandhi told reporters.
Attack on CM Saini: “A Tamasha at the Cost of Justice”
Gandhi accused Haryana CM Nayab Saini of making false promises of justice. He said the CM assured the family of swift action, but three days have passed without any movement on their demands, including action against officers allegedly responsible for harassing Kumar.
“This is no longer just about an inquiry. This is a tamasha being played out at the cost of a grieving family’s dignity. The funeral has not happened. The daughters are under immense pressure,” said Gandhi.
Funeral Delayed Amid Demand for Justice
More than a week since the IPS officer’s death, his funeral has not been conducted, as the family demands justice before performing last rites. Amaneet P. Kumar, his wife and a serving IAS officer, continues to demand accountability, holding firm that her husband was pushed to the brink by professional harassment.
Opposition Pressure Mounts on Haryana Government
Rahul Gandhi’s visit adds weight to the Opposition’s growing pressure on the BJP-led Haryana government. Criticism has intensified over the handling of the suicide probe, the lack of immediate action, and the broader message it sends about caste and power within India’s administrative machinery.
Last week, the Chandigarh Police formed a six-member SIT to investigate the FIR filed based on the “final note” left behind by Kumar. The note allegedly names officers responsible for mental harassment.
Administrative Shakeup Begins
Facing public outrage and political heat, the Haryana government on Monday sent DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave, and transferred Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya. While these moves are seen as attempts to de-escalate the situation, the family and Opposition leaders insist that symbolic reshuffles are not enough.
