New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year extension in tenure for Satish Kumar, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board. The extension, effective from September 1, 2025, will allow Kumar to continue in his leadership role until further orders or the completion of his extended term.
A Distinguished Career in Indian Railways
Satish Kumar, an accomplished officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), has had an illustrious career spanning over three decades. He began his service in March 1988, with initial postings in the Jhansi Division of the erstwhile Central Railway and the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi. Over the years, he has held pivotal roles in multiple railway divisions, including North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur, and Patiala Locomotive Works, where his technical acumen and leadership brought significant operational improvements.
Leadership and Innovations
Kumar’s career is marked by his commitment to innovation and safety. One of his most impactful contributions has been the development of the Fog Safe Device, a critical technology that enhances train safety during low-visibility winter conditions. His emphasis on Total Quality Management (TQM), honed through specialized training under the UNDP in 1996, has shaped his approach toward continuous improvement and reliability in railway operations.
Between 2017 and 2019, Kumar served as Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Lucknow Division, where his leadership ensured the seamless management of the 2019 Kumbh Mela, one of the largest gatherings in the world, with millions of pilgrims traveling by rail. His tenure was noted for infrastructure development and passenger service improvements.

Academic Excellence and Key Roles
Kumar holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, and advanced qualifications including a Post Graduate Diploma in Operations Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). His blend of technical expertise and managerial acumen has enabled him to take on challenging assignments, including serving as Senior Deputy General Manager and Chief Vigilance Officer at North Western Railway, Jaipur.
Before his elevation as Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, Kumar held the position of Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), where he played a key role in advancing traction and rolling stock systems across the Indian Railways. His leadership has consistently been characterized by efficiency, safety, and innovation.

Since taking charge as Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, Kumar has been instrumental in steering Indian Railways towards modernization, enhanced passenger experience, and infrastructure expansion.
