2025 wasn’t a great year for Indian Civil Aviation sector, which caters to almost one third of India’s population every year. After AI 171 crashed in Ahmedabad, Indigo crisis almost brought air travellers to their wits end in December. Everybody knows the prognosis of the problem but nobody has so far been able to decode the solutions – both long term and short-term ones.
Few are better equipped than Rohit Nandan, to figure out both the problem and the solution. Having been Chairman and Managing Director of Air India and Joint Secretary in Ministry of Civil Aviation, he knows the system inside out, its strengths, intricacies, pitfalls and the way out of the crisis. In a video interview with Indian Masterminds he discussed all aspects of the civil aviation sector which might be serving only two per cent people in India but carries almost 40-45 crore passengers every year – which is equal to one third population.

According to Mr Nandan, the key issues facing the civil aviation sector is airport capacity, airline capacity, duopoly of airlines, shortfall of trained pilots and Regulation. Citing international standards and examples, he comes up with innovative solutions which would fit the Indian context and resolve the crisis at the soonest.
