New Delhi: Senior Indian diplomat Rudrendra Tandon, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 1994 batch, has been appointed Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, marking an important appointment in India’s diplomatic leadership overseeing eastern strategic relations.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on Wednesday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment. He will succeed Periasamy Kumaran, who has been serving in the position since April 1, 2025.
Currently serving as Ambassador to Greece
Before this appointment, Tandon was serving as India’s Ambassador to Greece, a position he assumed on June 27, 2023.
As Secretary (East), he will oversee India’s diplomatic engagement with countries in East and Southeast Asia, while also handling strategic relations across parts of the Indo-Pacific, Oceania and selected regions of the Americas.
This division of the MEA plays a crucial role in India’s foreign policy, especially amid growing geopolitical focus on the Indo-Pacific region.
Handled BIMSTEC and SAARC as Additional Secretary
Prior to his posting in Greece, Tandon served as Additional Secretary in the MEA, where he handled regional groupings including BIMSTEC and SAARC.
His experience in multilateral diplomacy and regional cooperation is expected to strengthen India’s eastern diplomatic outreach.
Extensive diplomatic postings across key global capitals
During his diplomatic career, Tandon has served in several major Indian missions abroad.
His international postings include assignments in:
- Paris
- Algiers
- Kabul
- Moscow
He also served as Consul General in Jalalabad.
Ambassador to ASEAN Secretariat and Afghanistan
Tandon served as Ambassador to the ASEAN Secretariat from July 2018 to August 2020, a strategically significant posting given India’s Act East policy.
He later served as Ambassador to Afghanistan from September 2020 to August 2021 during a critical phase in regional developments.
These assignments gave him direct exposure to both regional diplomacy and security-linked foreign policy issues.
Held important positions in PMO and MEA headquarters
Within India, Tandon has held several sensitive assignments in the MEA and Prime Minister’s Office.
His domestic assignments include –
- Under Secretary (Pakistan)
- Director in the Prime Minister’s Office
- Director (Pakistan)
- Joint Secretary (PAI – Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran)
- Joint Secretary (UNP – United Nations Political Division)
These roles placed him at the centre of strategic diplomatic coordination involving neighbourhood policy and multilateral affairs.
Academic background and personal profile
Rudrendra Tandon holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from Delhi School of Economics.
He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1994 and is married to an Indian Police Service officer.
Strategic significance of appointment
Tandon’s appointment comes at a time when India is deepening diplomatic engagement across East Asia, Southeast Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific amid shifting geopolitical alignments.
As Secretary (East), he will play a central role in managing India’s diplomatic outreach in one of the most strategically sensitive regions for trade, connectivity, maritime cooperation and regional security.
