New Delhi: The railway concession for gallantry medal recipients has been officially approved by the Government of India, offering lifetime free train travel to India’s bravest soldiers. This major welfare move ensures that recipients of gallantry awards from the Army, Navy, and Air Force can travel free of cost across Indian Railways, along with one companion. The decision, confirmed by defence officials, also includes benefits for families of posthumous awardees.

Alongside this, Indian Railways has introduced a new employment framework to support ex-servicemen and Agniveers in transitioning to civilian careers.

Details of Railway Concession for Gallantry Medal Recipients

The government has introduced a lifetime complimentary railway travel scheme for gallantry award winners across all three armed forces.

The scheme covers recipients of the following gallantry awards:

  • Sena Medal (Army)

    • Parents or spouse can avail the benefit

This ensures that the families of martyrs are also respected and supported.

‘Framework of Cooperation’: Jobs for Ex-Servicemen & Agniveers

Alongside travel benefits, Indian Railways and the Indian Army have launched a major initiative called the “Framework of Cooperation.”

Objective

  • Help soldiers transition smoothly into civilian jobs
  • Provide awareness about employment opportunities
  • Build a structured support system

Reservation in Railway Jobs

Under this framework, job reservations have been defined:

For Ex-Servicemen

  • 10% reservation in Level-2 and above posts
  • 20% reservation in Level-1 posts

For Retired Agniveers

  • 5% reservation in Level-2 and above posts
  • 10% reservation in Level-1 posts

Recruitment Data (2024–2025)

  • Total reserved posts: 14,788
    • Level-1: 6,485 posts
    • Level-2 & above: 8,303 posts

Recruitment Process

  • Level-1 posts: Through Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs)
  • Level-2 posts: Through Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs)

Fast-Track Hiring Measures

To speed up hiring:

  • Ex-servicemen are being recruited as contract Pointsmen
  • 5,000+ Level-1 posts are currently under process
  • 9 Railway Divisions have signed MoUs with Army units
  • Army recruitment agencies are coordinating with Railways

This ensures faster employment opportunities for retired defence personnel.

What is the Importance of Railway Concession for Gallantry Medal Recipients

This dual initiative—free travel + job opportunities—is a strong step toward:

  • Recognizing military bravery in practical ways
  • Supporting families of martyrs
  • Ensuring financial and career stability after service
  • Strengthening civil-military integration

It also aligns with the government’s broader vision of “respect with responsibility” for armed forces personnel.
