Rourkela: The Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has successfully commissioned a state-of-the-art Ladle Furnace 2D (LF#2D) in its Steel Melting Shop-II, marking a significant stride in its modernization drive.
The ladle furnace, a vital secondary steel refining unit, will play a key role in enhancing the quality and efficiency of steel production. It was commissioned on Wednesday, and the plant declared its operational status on Thursday.
Advanced Facility, Zero-Incident Commissioning
In a statement, RSP emphasized that the LF#2D is equipped with-
A 30 MVA furnace transformer
- Water-cooled ladle roof
- Hydraulic roof-lifting system
- Advanced electrode handling assemblies
- Mechanised ferroalloy feeding system
The commissioning process adhered strictly to safety protocols, achieving a zero-incident milestone, the plant added.
Supporting New Slab Caster Operations
The new ladle furnace is expected to significantly improve liquid steel supply to both existing and newly installed slab casters, improving overall production timelines and flexibility.
“This achievement underscores RSP’s commitment to technological modernisation, enhanced productivity, and a strong culture of safety,” the company said.

Alok Verma, Director In-Charge of RSP (also holding additional charge of Durgapur Steel Plant and IISCO Steel Plant), praised the successful commissioning, stating:
