New Delhi: SJVN Limited announced on Monday that its Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) has reached a historic milestone of 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative power generation since its commissioning in May 2004. The achievement highlights the station’s consistent operational excellence and its significant contribution to India’s clean energy sector.

Milestone Celebrated with Senior Officials

The milestone was celebrated at the power house in the presence of SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta, Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma, and other senior company officials. Congratulating the team, CMD Gupta said the achievement reflects NJHPS’s reliability, efficiency, and sustained contribution to the northern power grid.

He highlighted that the station has supported grid stability during peak demand periods and has become a cornerstone of clean energy supply in the region.

  • Highest annual generation: 7,610.257 million units in FY 2011–12
  • Highest monthly generation: 1,222.170 million units in July 2024
  • Highest daily generation: 39.572 million units on August 13, 2024

These records showcase the station’s ability to harness favourable hydrological conditions efficiently and maintain consistent power generation.

Acknowledging Contributions of Employees and Stakeholders

SJVN Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma praised the efforts of present and former employees associated with NJHPS. Rajeev Kapoor, Head of Project, expressed gratitude to the SJVN management, Ministry of Power, Government of Himachal Pradesh, contractors, and the local community for their support in achieving this milestone.

Environmental and Socio-Economic Impact

The generation of 150 BU of clean electricity represents substantial environmental benefits, as it displaces fossil fuel-based power, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and supports India’s climate commitments and clean energy transition.

NJHPS has also contributed to regional development, creating employment opportunities, improving local infrastructure, and enhancing economic growth in the surrounding areas.
