New Delhi: In a significant development on October 14, 2025, the Supreme Court of India expressed its appreciation for the Union Public Service Commission’s (UPSC) decision to release the answer keys of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination promptly after the test.
UPSC Answer Keys Transparency: Background of the Policy Shift
The policy change came in response to a writ petition seeking greater transparency in the Civil Services Examination process. Senior Advocate Jaideep Gupta, appointed as Amicus Curiae, proposed that UPSC publish provisional answer keys the day after the preliminary examination. Initially, UPSC opposed this suggestion, citing potential delays and uncertainties. However, in a subsequent affidavit filed in September 2025, UPSC reversed its stance and agreed to the proposal.
UPSC Answer Keys Transparency: Court’s Response and Acknowledgment
During the proceedings, a bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice A.S. Chandurkar commended the UPSC for its decision. Justice Narasimha remarked that the proposal was “excellent” and highlighted the importance of participatory adversarialism in legal proceedings.
The Court disposed of the matter, granting petitioners the liberty to approach the concerned High Court if necessary.
Implications for UPSC Aspirants
This move is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in the examination process, providing aspirants with timely access to answer keys.
It allows candidates to assess their performance and address any discrepancies promptly, fostering a fairer evaluation system.
