Mr. Abhishek Mohanty, a 2010-batch IPS officer caught in the ongoing cadre dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, has received relief from the Telangana High Court. The court has directed that he continue serving in Telangana until the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) delivers its verdict on the matter.
The dispute began when the Central government directed Mr. Mohanty to join the Andhra Pradesh cadre. However, he challenged this order before the CAT. After failing to secure immediate relief from the tribunal, he filed a petition in the Telangana High Court. Meanwhile, he continued serving in Telangana based on a Government Order (GO) issued by the state.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Mr. Narasimha Sharma, representing the Central government, claimed he was unaware of the Telangana government’s GO permitting Mr. Mohanty to remain in the state. In response, Mr. Mohanty’s counsel cited a previous CAT ruling affirming the GO’s validity and argued that the officer should be allowed to continue in Telangana. He further emphasized that, as Mr. Mohanty is a resident of Hyderabad, he should be allocated to the Telangana cadre.
The final decision now rests with the CAT, but for the time being, Mr. Mohanty will continue his service in Telangana.
